Introducing Myself

Who I am

Hello, Hola, Gruetzi! My name is Juan Pablo Mendoza. I am 22 years old and I attend Trinity College Dublin (TCD), completing my full time Speech and Language Production (SLP) full-time masters.

Currently, my interests are in under resourced langauges, and the problems that arise with the lack of clean and usable data for model training due to a number of reasons such as a lack of orthographic norms. Furthermore, I am currently working on a project that involves creating a dataset for an under resourced language the context of ASR transcriptions, where the hope is to eventually document what are phonemic rules behind this language.

What Languages Do I Speak?

I am a fluent English and Spanish speaker. I have a B2 level in Irish, and I have a conversational level of German and Zurich Swiss German. I am always eager to learn new languages and improve my existing skills.

Where I Am From

I am born and raised in Dublin, Ireland to Mexican parents.

Why I Am Here And What I Am Hoping To Achieve

I chose to attend TCD's SLP masters as within the Republic of Ireland, Trinity is the best university for Computational Linguistics. During my time here, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how computational methods can be applied to support under resourced languages, meet people from different backgrounds, and expand my knowledge in this field.

My long term hope for the future, however, is to one day return to Swizerland and work with the Swiss development of ASR models.
